Strategic Content Literacy Assessment, also known as SCLA, is something that I’ve honestly never heard of but it makes sense. It’s interesting to me that it has different ways for different subjects. I think as a teacher I would definitely use these assessments during the year to document their growth in disciplinary literacy. Summative assessments have literally taken over the classroom and I’m sure we’ve all seen it. That’s all some teachers really focus on. Formative assessments are basically super underrated these days to be honest.

So I have some questions for ya’ll

  1. Do you see formative assessments going on in your placements? If not, how do we bring them back?
  2. Do you agree with the form of assessments the author though of? Because it kind of bothered me that for science, social studies and english, the teacher picks texts that don’t require prior knowledge. Isn’t that the one thing we’re taught to do? I don’t know. Just a thought.

See you all tomorrow!

  1. I do see formative assessments in my placement. My teacher is always walking around and asking an endless amount of questions to monitor the children. I think this is extremely important when it comes to tracking children's progress and to see where a child stands. This will help teachers notice struggling students as well.

    1. That's definitely a great way to do it!

  2. Formative assessments only take place when my mentor teacher is reading a loud chapter books to the kids. She doesn't really do formative assessments for other subjects. The kids always ask questions when they don't understand so they do self checks. However some students are shy and don't raise their hand so those students fall behind .

    1. Yeah, I think as teachers sometimes it's so easy to forget about those struggling students because we put our attention on those excelling more.

  3. Besan,

Great post! I see formative assessment in my classroom. Homework is one form, but after different lessons that are taught we do ask the students questions to see what they are learning. We do this in reading and in math. We will ask questions about what we learned the day before as well to assess if they remember and to see if we need to review anything.

I feel that overall, more emphasis is put on summative assessments in comparison to formative but I think they are equally both important.

  4. I have never heard of strategic content literacy assessment before this reading. Sometimes it is hard to find background knowledge for those subjects but it is always important that you some how make a connection to a students PRIOR EXPERIENCE.

There is formative assessments going on in my placement. There could always be more but the teacher models some formative assessment when she asks students to share out answers. I like using thumbs up and five fingers to grasp students understanding. Formative assessment is important because you might need to redirect the lesson or revise what you are teaching.

  5. Hi Besan,

I have seen my mentor teacher use formative assessment in her teaching. She use it across all the subjects she teaches. While she is teaching the students, she would ask questions to see how well they are understanding the concept, and she would adjust her lesson accordingly to what she observed. There will be times when she would give out in-class assignment and she would use these as her formative assessment rather than their homework. The reason she doesn't prefer the students' homework to be used as a formative assessment is because when they are at home, anyone can help them, which will lead to an inaccurate assessment of her students understanding of the concept.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Van

  6. Hi Besan!
In my placements I do see formative assessment through student dialogue, turn and talk, exit slips and much more.
    Happy Birthday! :)

  7. I see a lot with exit slips. We also pass out worksheets for students to start and then we collect what they have finished so far from them. We look at them and don't grade them but look over to see what they understand and don't. Then pass them back the next day to review and finish.

  8. Besan,

I do see formative assessments, especially in math it's actually incorporated within the structure of the book they use. My teacher begins by going over this section, and getting a feel for where the students are at and bases the rest of the lesson around this assessment.

  9. I definitely see formative assessment in my placement, although it is more formal. There is not much informal formative assessment. I plan to incorporate more of it as I teach more. It is interesting that they brought up selecting texts that require no prior knowledge. That is different from what we know. Before I decide if it is good or not I would have to try it first to see if it works for my students.
